ClassFindr

Web Application

Overview

ClassFindr aims to streamline the process for students to find, compare, and register for courses that meet their academic needs across various accredited universities. Our team undertook the challenge to design ClassFindr, a platform that simplifies course discovery for students looking to take classes outside their primary institution. As the project manager of the team I undertook the responsibility of managing and assigning tasks, keeping a tight schedule, and making sure everything was clean and organized while also helping the the design and research of the final project.

Research Overview

We began by defining our research objectives around two questions: why students take courses at other universities and what challenges they face when transferring credits. Through competitive analysis of Student Information Systems and platforms like NerdWallet and Berkeley Time, we identified best practices in usability. We then interviewed ten students aged 21–26 to understand their experiences with course selection and credit transfer. Using an Affinity Map, we found key pain points such as limited course options, unclear transfer policies, and confusing credit evaluation timelines. These insights informed our problem definition and led us to create our primary persona, Betty.

Ideation and Prototyping

For the MVP, we focused on core features that addressed students’ needs: an advanced course catalog, a class comparison tool, and a schedule planner. The user flow guided students from the dashboard through course discovery, comparison, and scheduling, with the mid-fidelity prototype emphasizing clarity and organization. The dashboard included a credit tracker, personalized recommendations, and the current schedule; the catalog supported searching, filtering, and adding or comparing courses. After five usability tests, we refined the design by clarifying the progress tracker, explaining recommendation sources, adding “see more” buttons, improving calls-to-action on the comparison page, and enabling class searches by time directly from the schedule view.

Visual Design

Our final prototype integrated a cohesive visual system:

  • Color Palette: A balanced mix of primary and secondary tones for readability and user guidance

  • Typography: DM Sans for headers and subheads

  • Grid System: Organized structure to support intuitive navigation

  • Component System: For uniform design amongst the team and pages.
